Dawning Ascent

I was given an ARC of Dawning Ascent by Jen L. Grey in exchange for a review.

Overall Rating: 4/5

This is one of those books that definitely had me on a roller coaster ride of emotions while reading it. I didn’t know who I should trust from one chapter to the next and didn’t know what was ever going to happen throughout the story. This definitely had me hooked from the beginning and kept my attention the whole way through.

The story follows Ariah as she comes into her powers that from what I gathered from reading the story, only women have. Hair color also seems to play a part in how strong a woman’s powers are, which I found very interesting.

I loved how complex this story was. There’s dysfunctional family aspects, but also ideal family aspects, which is definitely interesting considering both types of family aspects are in Ariah’s own family. The love triangle in this story also amazed me. It happened so organically that I didn’t really notice it at first. I can’t wait to see how that affects the sequel when it’s released.

The end of the story literally had me shouting at my Kindle because of the very abrupt cliffhanger. This is one of those books that I wish I could know what happens next right away and not have to wait for the next book to be available.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy stories with magic, romance, betrayal, strong and weak family dynamics, and a cast of characters who make you never want to put the book down. I can’t wait to read the sequel to find out what happens!
