Synopsis: Kylene Danners’s ex-FBI agent father is in prison for murder and she’s hell-bent on getting him out. But trying to investigate in the small town where a defensive lineman is a hero no matter who he tries to kill and the girl who gets him locked up is public enemy number one is dangerous. Dark secrets are everywhere in Jasperville—the kind Ky can’t walk away from.

When rookie FBI agent Cedric Dawson returns to town to finish an open investigation, he goes undercover at her high school—as her ex. Determined to keep her from interfering, Dawson’s plan backfires after Ky gets an anonymous call about missing girls officially labeled as runaways—runaways that didn’t really run away at all.

Because dead girls can’t run.

And they don’t say a word.

43263260I’m so excited to be apart of the blog tour, which is being hosted by TBR and Beyond, for Don’t Say a Word by Amber Lynn Natusch. Last year, I was able to read Dare You to Lie and instantly became obsessed with it. I wanted the sequel the moment I finished reading book one and was very excited when I had the chance to read Don’t Say a Word back in March.

As this is a review for the second book in the series, there is a possibility of spoilers for Dare You to Lie, but I will also be keeping this somewhat vague. As this is a mystery book, I feel like most people will want to go into it not knowing much.

Don’t Say a Word has trigger warnings for sexual assault and underage prostitution. There is also violence in this story.

Don’t Say a Word picks up directly after the end of Dare You to Lie, which I really appreciated. I didn’t feel like I was missing out on pieces of the characters stories or missing out on information. Since it does pick up immediately after the end of book one, you definitely need to read Dare You to Lie before reading this one or you could find yourself very confused because of not knowing what happened prior to the start of Don’t Say a Word.

In this story, Kylene is back in the middle of everything she probably shouldn’t be in the middle of. Along with all of the loose ends from the end of Dare You to Lie that Ky is dealing with, she also has a new case dropped in front of her. A girl calls her and informs her that girls are going missing and how she is feeling about the situation. While she doesn’t reveal much information, she does say that she will only work with Ky. This leads to Deputy Dawson coming back into the picture.

There is so much of Dawson in this story and I was definitely loving it! He drops the bomb on Ky that he’ll be working undercover as a high school student at her school and on top of that, they’ll be posing as exes that are getting back together while he is there.

While there is amazing banter and romantic tension, the main focus of this story is definitely the case. I really appreciated that because while I love stories that focus solely on the romance and all of that, I know that with this story, the focus needs to be on the case. I would have been highly disappointed if I hadn’t found out what was going on and how everything ended.

I loved how much the characters developed and grew in the sequel. Kylene is dealing with a lot and is having a hard time moving past the events that happened in Dare You to Lie as well as events that happen during Don’t Say a Word. I appreciate that it’s honest and that it feels realistic.

I was honestly second guessing everything that happens in the story. Everyone feels like a suspect and I found myself wrong on who was behind things during the entire story.

I definitely can’t wait for more from this series. I absolutely loved both Dare You to Lie and Don’t Say a Word and know that anything else in this series will be just as amazing.

Favorite Quotes:

I had two coping mechanisms-three, if you counted sarcasm.  Extreme denial or all-out fixation/obsession were the main ones, neither of which she would approve.

“You know that would make you the only male in existence capable on multitasking, right?  You’re like a mythical creature…a unicorn.”

“What we want to believe and what’s actually true are rarely if ever the same thing, Danners…”

“You have met me, correct? Do I scream warm and cuddly, ‘get your free hugs here’ to you?”
